Have More Fun… Be More Fun

February 14, 2011

I have known many people first hand who lived to be well into their 90’s and take notice when a 100 year old person is being interviewed.  Almost unanimously this group of people project an optimistic and fun outlook on life. It is a good bet they did not just start being optimistic when they reached age 90 and probably maintained a fun loving spirit for most of their lives.

On the other side of the life cycle… are happy-go-lucky children.  Unless the children are living under extreme duress, this group seems to be the happiest and most content group of people on earth.  They have outgrown diapers, earaches, and crying jags.  Their daily objective is to have more fun than the day before.  A great way to live life, indeed.

These two scenarios beg the questions: what happens to people in between the ages of nine-ninety and where did all the fun go?

A better question and more to the issue is how people in between these two extremes can recapture the same level of happiness and fun they experienced as a youngster and carry that spirit with them to age 90 and beyond?

They don’t teach the subject of fun in public schools… and it does not normally get the attention it deserves from writers and media people. It is often taken for granted.  To awaken the fun loving spirit inside, you are the only person who can do that.  Besides, it would be difficult for even a perceptive scholar to draw up an effective plan for an individual on how to have more fun.  If such a map were available it wouldn’t work anyway because everyone is different and each person has a unique understanding of what is fun for them.

Here are thoughts that may help one break out of the ruts you may be in and have more fun.Peter and Wife Jody

  • Make the decision now - If you want to have more fun in life just do it.  People in general make far too many excuses on why their lives are not more fun.  Excuses just get in the way.  90+ year olds had many of those same reasons to make excuses but they made the decision to take another path.
  • No boundaries – Real fun does not have a starting point or an ending point.  It is more of a state of mind that evolves by way of conscious personal decisions.  Anticipation is exciting and memories of fun times are forever.
  • Unexpected moments often end up being the most fun - So, always try to be ready.  The more one can maintain a positive state of mind the more fun you will have.  And, you won’t have to even try.  Fun will find you if you sustain a positive disposition.
  • Observe children and listen to the old peoples storiesLots of lessons to be learned here.  On occasion,
make believe you are ten years old again… live in the present, don’t worry about tomorrow, don’t care what others think, and let yourself go.
  • Fun is contagious Be a fun person around others.  Everyone feels better and all of a sudden you will be more popular within your social circles.
  • Dare to be differentLook around, the world seems to be getting copycat like.  People who seem to be having the most fun are those not following the crowd.  Be yourself and there will never be another like you.
  • You are never too old to playNo explanation necessary.

Go out and enjoy the rest of your day!
